At Unicorn Preparatory we believe that education goes beyond the classroom and that fairness and being a team player is taught on the sports field. We actively encourage our children to participate in both sport and other extra curricular activities on a regular basis. Unicorn offers a stimulating range of options including:
ATHLETICS
Athletics offers exciting track and field events for pupils from under 9 to under 13, with competition at both inter-house and inter-school level.
SWIMMING
Swimming develops confidence, technique and fitness from an early age. Pupils have the opportunity to compete in galas and progress through local and provincial competitions.
NETBALL
Netball is introduced in grade 1 and continues through to under 13. Our 6 netball courts and dedicated coaching team provide an excellent environment for players to develop and thrive.
HOCKEY
Both boys and girls have the option to play hockey. Mini hockey is introduced from grade 1, and hockey is introduced in grade 4. Both our hockey boys and hockey girls compete at league level hockey each year, and produce results that we are always proud of.
RUGBY
Our grade 1 to 2 pupils are introduced to rugby concepts with tag rugby. From Grade 3 to 7, rugby offers pupils the opportunity to develop their skills in a competitive and supportive environment. Mr Shima Mpahlele (Team Manager for the Limpopo Blue Bulls Primary Schools Rugby Association ) - coaches the boys from grade 3 to grade 7.
CRICKET
With expert coaching and a dedicated Junior Hornbills cricket academy, our cricket programme provides outstanding opportunities for both boys and girls to develop their game.
TENNIS
Tennis provides boys and girls with the opportunity to develop lifelong skills in a fun and competitive environment.
SOCCER
Our friendly soccer programme gives pupils the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful game in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Most importantly, pupils get to have fun, stay active and enjoy playing together.
CROSS COUNTRY
Cross country caters for runners from Under 9 to Under 19, with opportunities to compete at league, provincial and national level. Three of our pupils compteted at National level in 2026.
Unicorn also allows outside coaches to use our facilities for extracurricular activities. Many of these are run by the Junior Hornbills Academy.
The Junior Hornbills programme runs as an exciting and dynamic extra-sport option for our pupils. It offers fundamental athletic skills through netball, rugby, soccer, hockey and especially cricket. All these activities are available at an extra cost and are designed to develop coordination, confidence and team-spirit.
